Quite a detour has been taken here while I was putting together this month's musing.
I will tell you this. You were all going to read about "Great Gatsby" and the differences between "Art Nouvue, Art Deco and Art Garfunkel". This ain't no lie. It was going to be a meaty one.
Truth be told, it felt forced. And, I can't do that to you.
I am here to be real with you.
What brought me to "Rules of Attraction" for this month's musing is nothing more than seeing it now available on Amazon Prime Instant Video. The moment I saw this long forgotten movie cover, it just brought back...
Back to early 2000s.
Back when the term hipsters meant something else and barely existed in the mainstream.
Back to the time of Myspace. Back to record store hang outs, remember when Tower Records was the place for us to spend hours in to meet cute indie rockers and flip through foreign magazines??
Back when doing coke was SO TABOO!! Back when you have to check out a library book to look at herpes because there was no iphones- I swear these are actual scenes from the movie. I did not make this up!
A time when cool was authentic and somewhat original. You have to look for your style inspo while you are digging through bins of clothes to come up with outfits instead of scrolling down your feed.
This is when you DIY everything. Including your hair. I did with my hair.
Well, this month brought me back to a time I first discovered Shannyn Sossamon. When I discovered Rules of Attraction at the record store i worked at.
The movie itself was ok. Back than it was considered a little edgy. That's about it.
*Fun fact: Rule of Attraction is in the same blood line of stories by Bret Easton Ellis; Less than Zero, American Psycho, Glamourama... look it up, nerds!
Shannyn Sossamon is not a good actress.
There I said it.
But she is/was SO COOL. And so stunning in her own unique way.
If you are a child of the late 70's and early 80's, you stood witness to the influence she obviously has had in that generation of scenesters/hipsters/indie kids/etc.
From her as-if-out-of-nowhere arrival onto the silverscreen with the late Heath Ledger in 'A knight's Tale' to '40 days and 40 nights' with Josh Harnett to 'Rules of Attraction' with that guy from Dawson's Creek.
They say style recycles itself every 15 years or so; I am already seeing so much of her signature style making a come back.
With a face like that. A smile like that. With moves like that. What's not to love about Shannyn Sossamon, the MUSE?
Thank you for reading.
P.S, the difference between "Art Nouvue, Art Deco and Art Garfunkel" is that two of these didn't argue with Paul Simon all the time.
