Every month, I get to do this self indulgent thing, where I get to look for things that give me the feels to share with you.
Every month, there is something we OBSESS over. This month is no different.
Originally, I was to publish my #Musing on the ever so beautiful Liv Tyler circa 90s era. But it just didn't feel authentic/good enough for me; I got inspired because she is pregnant like me, and all this just made me feel more pregnant.
How did I go from Liv Tyler to Vivienne Westwood. TBH, maybe it's Liv's tartan skirt but Idk.
Anthony and I was talking about taking in his Westwood tartan to be tailored a few days ago.
Maybe that's why I got Westwood on my mind...
Taste is more rare than intelligence; it's simply hard to learn - Vivienne Westwood
Anthony has always been a fan of Vivienne Westwood. I get it.
It is not difficult to understand why; and see that they share the same sort of "CULTURAL MANIFESTO"
Westwood is from the Northern England like Anthony; both are driven by their artistic abilities and talent in effectively transpiring ideas/concepts.
Both have this OBSESSION with all things typically British: the whole thing with heritage, class, (again) tartan, the Queen and that underplayed, but juicy, sense of sex and sensuality.
Did I just say juicy and sex? In the same sentence?ew.
Provocative, awe inspiring, avant garde, unique, rebellious, an original.
Most of you are familiar with her background, so I am not going to waste your time and let's stick with what I find inspiring. If you didn't know who she is, ask GOOGLE. Now you know.
What I find most intriguing and relatable about her, is the way she THINKS, ACTS, and PURSUES.
She has always skirted the outside of the "dogma of society"; constantly challenging the status quo, the shoulds and the givens.
She believes in the importance of culture/traditions, which, is the opposite of DOGMA, people!!
What drives her to progress through the decades and hold the position of such influence is that she is the embodiment of passion and has the abilities to look back into history; to seek and wonder; and then form a set of original 'perfection', something new for the future.
The reason is beyond her action itself. Rather, it is her devotion to a set of beliefs and the discipline to never stop seeking, which she commits to.
Thinking, understanding; doing then commiting.
"If you understand the past, then we can create a better future. Either way, you can criticize the now, thus create something better; or push things further than it was, so there is not complacency." - Vivienne Westwood, 1990.
You can't have invention without techniques; you can't produce anything exotic except through something traditional. - She said.
Westwood, as an educator encourages her fashion students to seek inspirations from the classics, from the masters. The ancient Greeks, in particular the Hellenistic period is a period she goes back to often. (This maybe the first time I find my art history minor useful, thanks for nothing.)
She encourages them to look deeper than the way things appear, she pushes them to dive into the depth of reasoning; of how and why things work.
Bringing it all together to set an example, as a fashion designer and a business woman, by putting things into perspective.
To be honest, I never knew much about her besides her punk rock days and her ties with the Sex Pistols until now.
I find that I am agreeing with so much of her philosophy as I set out to learn more about her to write about here. So, thank you, the two of you reading this!
To round this up, here is an older short documentary that digs a little deeper than what I just did.
It's all love,
Gloria from the HQ
